The original hotel was opened in 1982 and is named after the city in Belarus. The original name was to be Hotel Krystal, but it was quickly decided before the opening, due to the partnership of the city of České Budějovice with the city of Gomel in the then Soviet Union, that the hotel would bear the name Gomel.
Hotel Gomel was bought in 1997 by the Hartlov family. In 2005, a complete renovation of the entire hotel was completed. In 2007, the Hartls sold it to CPI Hotels. In February 2011 CPI Hotel Gomel closed for another complete renovation, which lasted 14 months until April 2012, when the hotel was reopened under a new name.
The four-star Clarion Congress Hotel is located near the city centre on Pražská Street. It has 205 rooms, mostly double rooms. Its building is 71 m high and has 17 floors, it is among the 50 tallest buildings in the Czech Republic.
